Diana Higgins, B.S., CI
Diana Higgins came to Oklahoma to attend college at Tulsa University, and never left. Prior to that, her childhood years were spent in St. Louis, in the tip of Texas, and in small Eskimo villages. With schoolteachers for parents, learning was always a huge part of her life.
After graduating in 1982 with a B.S. degree in deaf education and elementary ed, Diana taught hearing 3rd & 4th graders for 6 years, before taking up her current position as Community Relations Manager of TSHA (Total Source for Hearing-loss and Access) – a non-profit United Way agency which serves people who are deaf or hard-of-hearing. Since 1988, she has educated thousands of people about hearing loss, resources, sign language and more. She has spoken to groups of 3 to 300+, and from preschoolers to octogenarians.
She especially works with those who are newly dealing with hearing loss as they age, through a monthly support group, through public presentations, and through TSHA’s extremely popular new assistive technology lab.
Diana has a rare perspective. Most people in the field work either with those who are hard-of-hearing or with those who are culturally Deaf. Diana is comfortable with both. She is a nationally certified sign language interpreter (Certificate of Interpreting) and has worked in that capacity for over 25 years.
Since 1996, a new hobby has grown into a second area of expertise. Diana does ballroom, country and swing dancing. She danced in competitions for eight years, and served as President of the Tulsa chapter of the amateur USA Dance association for 4 years. She and her dance partner have now been teaching for several years, and have done demonstrations for thousands of people of all ages.
Diana has just completed her Master’s of Human Relations degree from OU Tulsa.
