Come to Egypt!

TSHA’s community has a free passport!

Philbrook Museum will be closed to the public, but open just for the deaf / hard-of-hearing community and friends, on Tuesday, August 3 from 6 – 8 p.m. Here’s the information:

“Join us for a special night at Philbrook just for friends of TSHA. Discover ancient Egyptian mummies, amulets and sarcophagi on an interpreted tour of the exhibition To Live Forever: Egyptian Treasures from the Brooklyn Museum. Enjoy a glass of wine and tap into your inner artist with a fun, interactive activity! “

Philbrook is making an incredible effort to be accessible to our community, and to reach out to those with hearing loss.

PLEASE PLAN TO COME OUT AND SUPPORT THEIR EFFORTS!

What a beautiful evening it will be – come enjoy a glass of wine with friends, an accessible tour (we’ll also plan to have assistive listening devices), the gorgeous gardens and an “Egyptian evening”!  All at no cost.

While an RSVP is not required, it would certainly be helpful if I could let Philbrook know about how many people to plan for. Contact: dhiggins@tsha.cc or (918) 832-8742.

Wow…. Did Apple invent a cell phone for the Deaf?

Read this article and marvel at how far technology has taken us!

Video Relay Calling Through FaceTime Assists Deaf

Screen shot 2010 07 16 at 15.03.05 Video Relay Calling Through FaceTime Assists Deaf

If you thought the iPhone 4’s remarkable FaceTime feature was just for fun, then think again. ZVRS – a company which specializes in video relay software for the deaf – has just announced its latest software: iZ, for iPhone 4.

iZ was announced at a private event held at the Hard Rock Cafe in Philadelphia, according to Apple Insider. There, the app’s developers successfully demonstrated how deaf iPhone 4 owners may use iZ to communicate over the phone.

This is a remarkable feat achieved by ZVRS, and if AT&T (and other cellular data networks around the world) come to some agreement with Apple, FaceTime over 3G could effectively invent a “telephone for the deaf.”

I have to admit, this is the first time I’ve thought the iPhone 4’s slogan, this changes everything, might actually hold more than an ounce of truth.

ZVRS plans to release iZ on July 26th, which is the 20th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. In the meantime, let’s hope this very clever application fulfils its humongous potential.

THIS Saturday, July 17, is our GAP (Gathering As Professionals) float trip, and it should be PERFECT! Hot enough for the water to feel awesome, no rain in the forecast, and with all the recent rain, the water should move right along…. Won’t have to drag your canoe over rocks half the trip!  There are about 13 people going at this time.

I’ve had a few slots open up for either a canoe or kayak.  RSVP by noon Thursday to dhiggins@tsha.cc or (918)832-8742 if you’d like to join the gang or for more information.

You can either meet at TSHA at 8:00 a.m. (don’t be late) to caravan to Tahlequah, or meet us at Falcon Floats by 9:30. Cost is about $20 per person.

We’ll be doing a 12-mile trip down the beautiful Illinois River near Tahlequah, with Falcon Floats (www.illinoisriver.net).

More detailed information and directions will be sent to those who RSVP no later than noon on JULY 15 to dhiggins@tsha.cc or (918) 832-8742 v/tty.

July 17, Saturday, time 8ish? – “Float Trip!!”

We haven’t done this in a few years – it’s a BLAST! We’ll be doing a 12-mile trip down the beautiful Illinois River near Tahlequah, with Falcon Floats (www.illinoisriver.net). You have a choice of rafts, canoes or sit-on-top kayaks, all of which hold at least 2 people. Cost will be approximately $20 per person, and the trip will take 5 – 10 hours (I suspect this depends heavily on how many water gun fights ensue during the journey!)  We’ll arrange a meeting spot for those who’d like to carpool. Block out the day for this, and prepare to get wet!

(Editor’s Note: We are forwarding this information from the CI group for those who may be interested.)

Hello Everyone,

I hope you are having a relaxing summer and staying cool. As many of you  know, in the summer our meetings are less formal. We get together to eat and socialize first and then meet in our circle to ask or answer questions, share our progress or challenges, and to provide whatever information and support is needed.  Each month at least one person tells me how much they have learned and how much this group (that means all of YOU) has made a difference in their lives. Thank you to each of you who has asked or answered a question, shared strategies, reported your progress, or discussed your challenges.

I will be providing lots of cool summer fruit, meat, cheese, and crackers, and dessert  Bring the drink of your choice and join us for conversation and sharing.

Kris Foyil, M.S., Speech-Language Pathologist and Clinical Instructor at TU will be facilitating this meeting.  Please welcome her and each other.
