“Strategies
for a
More Effective Conversation”

May 10 - Nicole Streich, speech pathologist, will be talking about strategies we use for conversational repair, adjusting the listening environment, and when to consider different technology…things that are all a part of auditory rehabilitation.

When: The second Thursday of each month, from 10:00 – 11:30 a.m.
Where: TSHA’s conference room, 8740 E. 11th St.
Accommodations: We usually have captions. Assistive listening devices and interpreters are available upon request, and our room is now looped, for those with t-coils.

What is Tulsa Hearing Helpers? It is a monthly gathering for people who have lost hearing later in life. All ages and amounts of hearing loss are welcome, along with friends and family members. Bring someone along!

Our Deaf Group AND a Double Wedding - Wow!

Here’s an update on the May 12 Cherokee Queen outing on Grand Lake.

First - they WILL give the discount to our group, even though we are paying individually and not in one lump sum! Be sure to thank them. So - it will be a little less than the $18 we planned on.

Second - they said to let you know that there is going to be a double wedding on the 2nd floor that afternoon. The first floor and all of the decks will still be available for our group.

BE SURE TO ALLOW PLENTY OF TIME TO GET TO THE CRUISE. If you’re coming from Tulsa, you might want to leave around 9:30 - 9:45, just to be safe.

The new Deaf Community Happy Hour group will be meeting on May 18, Friday, at Cheddar’s restaurant in Tulsa at 7:00 p.m. (on 71st near Hwy 169).

Looking for an opportunity to relax and chat in sign over good food? This is it!

They’re planning to gather again on June 16 at Copan Lake (around 10:00 a.m. til ??) Bring your own lunchbox… plan to socialize, and to swim if you like. More details on this date will be available after the May 18 gathering.

News & Events!

Here are a few things going on:

1. TSHA has just a few free tickets for the Tulsa Drillers ball game on Tuesday, June 12 at 7:00. Let me know asap if you’re interested in attending.

2. We’re still taking reservations for the Cherokee Queen cruise in Grove, on Grand Lake, on Saturday, May 12 from 12 – 2 (some will continue to chat and eat at Broclee’s restaurant after). $18 for the cruise for adults.

3. Hand and Voices (parent group) will meet at TSHA on May 7. The agenda will consist of the “We are Hands & Voices” presentation. This meeting is open to ALL parents of deaf/hoh kids, professionals, and the general public to let them know what H&V is about. We plan to start gathering around 5:30 for pizza and getting to know each other, and then start the meeting at 6:15, wrapping up by 8:00ish. We are working on child care and door prizes. Hands & Voices is dedicated to supporting families with children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing without a bias towards communication modes or methodology.

4. We’ve been asked to pass this on: Thursday, April 26th, at 6:45 p.m. is the next CI Support Group Meeting at The Mary K. Chapman Center for Communicative Disorders (2820 E. 5th Street) on the TU campus. Christy L. Miller-Gardner, AuD, Audiologist and Area Manager North Texas & Oklahoma with the Cochlear Corporation will be the guest speaker. She will be discussing resources we can access to improve our listening experiences.

National Volunteer Week

April 15th – April 21st is National Volunteer Week, and we would like to take this opportunity to thank and recognize all of our wonderful TSHA volunteers.
Whether you have worked in the office, served on the Board, helped at Souper Sunday or camp, etc. – you have helped us further our mission to bridge gaps to improve the quality of life of those affected by hearing loss.
It’s a team effort, and much of what we do would be impossible without the support of our amazing volunteers!
Each and every volunteer is uniquely important to TSHA. Thank you for volunteering. Your gift of time is greatly appreciated!

The Delta Zeta Sorority – Tulsa Alumnae Chapter – is sponsoring an evening at Mimi’s Café. They plan to donate the proceeds to TSHA! (Thank you, Delta Zeta.)

TSHA has received some tickets for the dress rehearsal of A Ballet Russes Evening, on March 29 at 7:00 p.m.

If you are interested in attending (and are SURE you can at that date and time), email dhiggins@tsha.cc by March 15 with both the maximum AND minimum number of tickets you could use. (For example, you’d like 6 to take the whole family, but you could use just 2 if we get lots of requests.)
